Web Developer (Maintenance & Improvements)
Part‑Time Freelance / Contractor | Remote
Simply Homeschool is a national Australian business supporting homeschool families through curriculum, resources, and community.
We’re looking for a capable, practical web developer to take over the ongoing maintenance and small improvements of our existing website. This is a long‑term role suited to someone who enjoys working with real‑world systems, fixing issues, and improving what’s already there — not rebuilding from scratch.
NB: We’ll start reviewing applications next week and may move quickly if we find a great fit, so early applications are encouraged.
About the role
This is a maintenance‑focused role, not a rebuild or greenfield project.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Keeping the existing website stable and reliable
- Diagnosing and fixing issues as they arise
- Implementing small improvements and new features we request
- Working within an established codebase that has grown over time
- Explaining technical limitations, risks, and options so we can make informed decisions
We handle most content updates and basic page layout internally. Support is mainly needed for forms, logic, integrations, and workflows.
Platform & context
Our website is built on Pulse, with custom functionality added over time. We own all code and data.
The system works well overall, but it has evolved organically and isn’t perfectly linear.
Prior Pulse experience is helpful but not required. We’re looking for someone comfortable learning an unfamiliar platform and working thoughtfully within an existing, evolving system.
Key areas you’ll work with
- General site troubleshooting and fixes
- Forms and user workflows
- Membership functionality (access control, payments, pausing memberships)
- Integrations, including:
- HubSpot
- eWAY
- Meta (Facebook) tracking
- Google Analytics
- Advising on feasibility, risks, and trade‑offs for new requests
What we’re looking for
Experience & skills
- Experience maintaining and improving existing websites
- Strong troubleshooting skills and comfort working with existing code
- Experience with forms, integrations, and membership‑style workflows
- Experience with CRMs, payment gateways, and analytics tools
- Ability and willingness to learn less‑common or unfamiliar platforms
Working style
- Comfortable working with non‑technical stakeholders
- Able to explain technical trade‑offs clearly without taking over business decisions
- Pragmatic, budget‑aware, and avoids over‑engineering
- Clear, responsive communicator
- Willing to teach simple tasks where appropriate
Availability & engagement
- Approx. 5–10 hours per month
- A mix of:
- Occasional urgent fixes (typically within ~24 hours)
- Non‑urgent improvements (completed over 1–2 weeks)
- Communication via email or Microsoft Teams
- Freelance / contractor role
- Opportunity for a long‑term working relationship
What this role is not
- Not a website rebuild or re‑platforming project
- Not about expanding scope without discussion
- Not about over‑engineering solutions
We value practical, proportionate solutions that respect time and budget constraints.
